SED.News – Social Commerce

While we all understand the power and potential of social commerce, it is good to remind ourselves of standard customer initiatives to improve upon the platforms we have already built.

Psychologists have defined six universal traits that have been seen in shoppers and also now represented when it comes to social commerce:

Social Proof: 81% of customers reach out to friends and family members on social networking sites for advice before purchasing products
Authority: 77% of online shoppers use reviews to make purchase decisions
Scarcity: 77% of people like getting exclusive offers that they can redeem via Facebook. We assign more value to products that are less available
Like: 50% of shoppers have made a purchase based on the recommendation of the people they follow(and like) on social networks. We follow those we like and do the things they do
Consistency: Purchases made from the brands we trust reinforce our future shopping patterns
Reciprocity: We have an innate desire to repay favors in order to maintain social fairness, whether those favors are invited or not

The take-away? “Social commerce helps shoppers make smart and savy purchases. In return retailers are able to listen and implement changes in order to provide a tailored product and shopping experience.”

SED.News – L’Oreal Insider

Loreal Insider
Last week, cosmetics giant L’Oreal launched their first digital CRM programme which set out to reward customers with product samples and vouchers in return for feedback. In expansion efforts, L’Oreal have just added a direct mail component, sending out more than 500,000 leaflets that have been designed entirely to drive traffic to LorealInsider.co.uk.

The online portal allows visitors to register via Facebook connect, which enables L’Oreal to gain registrations while utilising viral content sharing. To apply for free samples, receive money-off vouchers, enter exclusive competitions, and more, L’Oreal asks that users fill in style preferences and the types of products they interest them, saying that ‘the more you tell us, the more you’ll be rewarded’.

This puts L’Oreal in a fantastic position to build brand engagement, tailor their products to customer expectations, as well as introduce an impressive social commerce platform later on.

SED.News – Heineken Beerfriender

Heineken have turned out a great example of the kind of innovation that goes hand-in-hand with promotion efforts.

The beer company have just released a device called a “BeerTender”, a machine which basically lets you pour ice cold draft beer at home. Recognising that this is an item that may cause some household arguments if purchased over the holiday, Heineken have developed a cheeky Facebook app to keep everyone happy. “BeerFriender” is an app which connects individuals who want a BeerFriends to each other. With the app, you buy your new ‘friend’ a BeerFriender, and they buy one for you, too! Both of your packages will come with a Christmas card (perhaps from your ‘friend at work’) and be gift wrapped. It looks like you can now buy authenticity!

SED.News – eBay Christmas Donations

The US division of eBay have teamed up with “Toys for Tots” to deliver some Christmas cheer this holiday season! In San Francisco and New York, their dual initiative – “The GIVE-A-TOY Store” – has set up completely interactive shop window displays which showcase a variation of toys. Each toy costs something different, and can be “bought” through digital QR codes in the window. When purchased, the toys are given to charity.

Because of the convenience of the buying process, this could end up being quite an important driver for future charitable causes and donations as a whole. As an innovative way to promote the cause, eBay are also raising their profile in the process. If neither store is convenient to get to but you would like to participate, you can also visit www.ebay.com/giveatoystore.

SED.News – Google Politics

Google Politics
As the 2012 US election cycle gets closer and closer, it will be very interesting to see how politicians will utilize social media to support their campaign efforts.

One social media platform that seems to ‘get it’? Google+. Yesterday, Google+ posted a guide to their social network for politicians and candidates that wish to maximise their presence, as well as open up to voters and constituents.

In the guide, Google+ are billing their purpose as a way to “promote an issue(s), platform or cause across the web”. It is a well-thought out collection of helpful advice which uses the existing political pages of Mitt Romney, Senator Bernie Sanders and others to highlight Google+’s success thus far.

Of course, they are suggesting such things as:

“Since you need to establish a personal profile on Google+ when creating a Google+ Page, we recommend that you use and update only your Google+ Page, not your personal profile, to avoid fragmenting your audience when they search for you on Google+. If you have a staff managing your account, another way to do this is by having a staff member use their name to set up the profile page of the account.”

It will be interesting to see how future efforts will factor into campaign decisions.

SED.News – An Average Day on Facebook

According new a brilliant new infograph by JESS3, the world’s most popular social network – Facebook – proves to be more ‘social’ than many of us think.

In an average day on Facebook, it is estimated that 26% of users “Like” a friend’s status, 22% comment on a friend’s status, and 15% update their own status.

The average user has 229 friends, of which 22% are from high school, 12% are co-workers, 9% are from college and 3% they only met once. In 2008, the average user was 33. Two years later, the average user was 38, five years older.

Compared with other social networks, Facebook users are the most engaged, meaning that Facebook – as we have mentioned previously – is likely to be the most beneficial service for brands. Fifty-two percent visit Facebook daily, in comparison to Twitter (36%), Myspace (7%) and LinkedIn (6%).

SED.News – Openmargin

Social E-Reading
Remember – back in your school days – when you were lucky enough to get the second-hand book that was previously owned by someone who took meticulous notes in the margin? Well, that experience has just become social.

A start-up named Openmargin is using that idea and bringing it to eBooks. With an iPad app, users are able to index notes, highlights, debates, and comments on an eBook – letting people share and connect as they wish. This could also potentially grow into a fantastic resource for literary advertising.

Currently, Openmargin is only supporting DRM-free content, which means most of the books are under various Creative Commons licenses. As they grow, Openmargin hopes to avoid becoming “just another service that plugs into Facebook and shows you those friends. The real hope is to show you not just opinions of people you know and agree with,” he said, “but to connect you with people who care about the same things, even if they don’t share your views.”

SED.News – Skype on Facebook

Facebook Skype
With the incredible new Facebook changes slowly trickling out to the masses, it looks as though it may only take a few years for Facebook to become one of the only places we need to visit online.

This week, Skype was released on Facebook. Basically, you will now be able to ping any of your online Facebook friends and a video window will instantly open inside the Facebook page you’re on. No login necessary. Though Skype video chats can be used for free anyway, the accessibility of the application being on Facebook is likely to promote premium accounts with the service, as well.
